Social network for extreme sports
The startup Ridebrain approached Rhyme with the idea of building an online network for skiers and snowboarders. The founders wanted to create a community for enthusiasts where they could connect with each other and let professionals post content to their followers.
The global community of pros and fans is tight-knit, and there is major demand for content — videos, tips, tricks, and favorite spots from well-known riders. Ridebrain wanted to tap into that atmosphere and create a platform that would supply that demand.
Rhyme was assigned to build the complete product — design and UX, as well as front- and backend development. We also provided support to the product owners and advised the entrepreneurs on concept and product design.
The main challenge was to reconcile limited resources with the need to create a solution that could compete in look, feel, and functionality with much larger social networks that consumers are used to.
React Native mobile app with build and continuous delivery pipeline via AppCenter. Available on both iOS and Android.
React + Gatsby frontend with GraphCMS and GraphQL. Static assets on AWS S3 with CI/CD on Bitbucket.
Node.js/Express API with MongoDB. Hosted on AWS Elastic Beanstalk with auto-scaling infrastructure.
The design follows the same principles across all platforms — giving users a consistent feeling of identity for the Ridebrain brand. Navigation and usage becomes effortless through shared UI components and design language.
GraphCMS serves as the content resource for both mobile and web, consumed and transformed by the backend — giving non-technical personnel an easy way to manage content.
The application is available on iOS and Android and has attracted a steady stream of enthusiasts through sponsorship of well-known freestylers.
The service also features a gear shop where users can buy apparel and equipment portrayed in the feed, endorsed by riders. Ski and snowboard spots is a feature that allows the community to discuss, rate, and connect content to different alpine locations — opening up potential new revenue streams.
